In this podcast I react to a post that I saw on Facebook that was praising the EPA.

EPA Test is a joke.
Like you said, primarily remembering irrelevant dates that laws were passed and the lion's share of the technical questions(at least on the exam I took) were about antiquated refrigerants.
Also, the test is open book most places, so it's really just a matter of being able to study enough to know where the information is and then looking it up again to fill in the multiple choice test.
